Description:

Discover the beauty of traditional letterpress printing in this two-day, beginner-friendly workshop. Students will start by creating a simple drawing, which we’ll transform into a letterpress printed piece: 12 letterpress folded cards with envelopes

During the first three hour group class, participants will learn to translate artwork into its most essential lines and shapes, exploring how simplification and limited color can become powerful design tools. We’ll walk step-by-step through the letterpress process, from preparing artwork to printing on our presses.

Letterpress offers both striking two-dimensional and sculptural three-dimensional effects. Inked impressions create a classic printed image, while blind embossing (printing without ink) produces a beautifully tactile indentation you can feel when you run your hand across the paper. Both techniques reveal letterpress’s signature charm: depth, texture, and a timeless, handcrafted quality.

Then each student will come back for a one on one printing session using a vintage 1905 Chandler & Price printer press. They will assist in printing on luxurious 100% cotton paper, known for its soft feel and its ability to hold deep impressions.

By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a set of 12 custom letterpress cards and envelopes and a new appreciation for this centuries-old craft that blends art, design, and hands-on making.

Tegan Duffy established Bungalow36, a design and letterpress studio, in 2010. Her work incorporates elements of color theory, painting, and photography. Tegan holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from the University of San Francisco and the Academy of Art, as well as an Associate of Arts in Graphic Design from UCSB.
